No smile is visible on the faces of those who, as healthcare workers, are confronted daily with the consequences of the pandemic. To better understand the strain within the hermetically sealed COVID wards, it is necessary to see it as well.

A collection of selfies captures healthcare personnel in brief, intimate moments of pause and respite – exhausted, weary, sorrowful, on the edge of their limits. Faces marked by the traces of the dramatic scenes unfolding before their eyes each day. Faces lined with creases, pressure marks, redness, and irritation left behind by masks and protective gear.

On the prints, the individuals later added handwritten comments. In this way, the project gives the people behind the masks not only a face, but also a voice.
